Adele Bloch-Bauer (August 9, 1881 in Vienna; January 24, 1925 in the same place) was an Austrian businesswoman and became known primarily for the painting Adele Bloch-Bauer I (The Woman in Gold) created by Gustav Klimt in 1907, one of the most significant works of the Vienna Secession. Adele Bauer was the daughter of bank director Moriz Bauer (1840-1905). She married sugar manufacturer Ferdinand Bloch (1864-1945) in 1899, who thereafter took on the surname Bloch-Bauer. In the salon of the couple Adele and Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer, who belonged to the Jewish upper middle class of Vienna, artists, writers, and social democratic politicians such as Karl Renner, the future first Chancellor of the Republic, and Julius Tandler gathered.
