As the first female architect in Vorarlberg, Adelheid Gnaiger (1916-1991) significantly shaped the architectural landscape of the region. Through her work, she earned professional respect and great recognition in a male-dominated field. Gnaiger's architectural language navigates between modernity and tradition, reflecting the focus of construction activities during the post-war years in her designs. Banks, schools, public administrative buildings, and single-family homes—many of which have since been altered, endangered, or demolished—characterize the architect's body of work. In this publication, the authors embark on a quest to uncover forgotten architecture in Vorarlberg that followed the developments of international architectural movements in the post-war period. Essays on Gnaiger's biography and various aspects of her work provide insight.
