Adnan Menderes (born in Aydın in 1899; executed on September 17, 1961, on İmralı prison island) was the first Prime Minister of Turkey to be elected through free elections. He governed from 1950 to 1960 and was overthrown by the military on May 27, 1960. After the Yassada trials, he was executed. Menderes was the son of a landowner from Güzelhisar in Aydın Province.
