Adolf Wilhelm Anton Wohlbrück (November 19, 1896 in Vienna; August 9, 1967 in Garatshausen) was an Austrian actor who went by the name Anton Walbrook in English exile. Wohlbrück was born as the son of the Hamburg circus clown Adolf II. Wohlbrück and came from a Jewish family with a long tradition in acting. After attending a monastery school in Vienna and a gymnasium in Berlin, he took acting lessons at the school of Max Reinhardt. During World War I, he was captured by the French, where he founded the Aucher Prison Theater, and then continued his career on various stages in Munich, Dresden, and Berlin. He made his film debut in 1915 in "Marionetten" by Richard Löwenbein and then occasionally appeared in silent films, but it was only with the advent of sound films that he gained significant recognition.
