Product details

This study is dedicated to one of the central theo-political concepts of the Hebrew Book of Jeremiah: Egypt. After introductory remarks on the historical relationships between Egypt and Judah in the 7th/6th century BCE, as well as on the syntax and semantics of the term, it analyzes and interprets all relevant pericopes using the methods of synchronic textual interpretation. It demonstrates how Egypt is presented as the land of the Exodus, as a covenant partner of Judah, and as an object of divine judgment, and how this defines Israel's origin, its current situation, and its future destiny. In this way, one of the main concerns of the Book of Jeremiah comes into focus: to remind God's people of their special role among the nations and to show them the path to their inner renewal.
