The centuries around the turn of the era represent the phase of Egyptian high culture during which contact with the West was most intense. Particularly in the fields of religion, science, and literature, Egypt during the Greco-Roman period enriched the European cultural tradition. Through Egypt's engagement with the foreign (the Near East, Greece, Rome), the legacy of late-period Egypt gains additional dimensions. This volume of the "Study Books" presents the period from the 4th century BC to the 5th century AD based on demotic (late Egyptian) textual sources. The breadth and diversity of this largely unknown literature are explored, as well as its historical and cultural significance for the bridge between pharaonic and Western culture. All texts are newly translated from Demotic.
