Aesthetic education is the subject of countless definitions and purposes. As a buzzword, it has become indispensable in educational policy debates. Whether it concerns core competencies or transfer effects, aesthetic education seems unavoidable in an enlightened, technologized, and mediatized society. But what exactly is meant when we talk about aesthetic education? And what is the value, for individuals and communities, in pursuing aesthetic education? Iris Laner poses these questions with a view to Western intellectual history and identifies three areas that have been thematized as core fields of aesthetic education since ancient Greece: the training of the senses, the sharpening of judgment, and the enhancement of creativity.
