Product details

Many Cubans are practitioners of the Afro-Cuban religion, a blend of African rites and Christian elements. The origins of this religion date back to the time of slavery when Africans were forbidden to practice their religion. At that time, slaves dedicated themselves to their African faith under the guise of Christian rituals and symbolism. To their enslavers, they appeared to have converted to Christianity. Over the decades, the secretive aspect of religious practice was eventually lost. Followers of the Afro-Cuban religion now recognize Christian traditions and symbols as part of their own faith. In his latest book, photographer Anthony Caronia showcases this mysterious and magical world of the Afro-Cuban religion. His black-and-white photographs are of the highest ethnological interest, bringing the rituals and customs to life.
