Product details

Agnes Bernauer was born around 1410, presumably in Augsburg, as the daughter of a bathhouse operator. After her secret marriage to the Bavarian duke's son Albrecht, the couple resided in Straubing. However, since Agnes posed an obstacle to the political and dynastic ambitions of the Munich ducal house, Albrecht's father, Duke Ernst, ultimately had her violently removed in 1435. Much about the tragic fate of Agnes Bernauer remains a mystery to this day. She became a legend and one of the most well-known female figures not only in Bavarian history. Hebbel and Orff made her immortal, and the festivals in Straubing and Vohburg regularly bring Agnes Bernauer back to life, only for her to die again in the waters of the Danube. This current biography of Bernauer skillfully juxtaposes legend and history and explores the numerous artistic and literary references.
