Product details

Aeschylus, the creator of the genre of tragedy, was considered the most significant of the three great tragedians in his own time; to this day, he is regarded as the greatest Greek poet alongside Homer. His works are not only read in schools and universities but are also frequently performed on German stages; his influence on the history of drama up to the present day is hard to overestimate. As the only complete German edition, this volume contains all of Aeschylus's surviving tragedies: alongside the Oresteia and the Suppliants, it naturally includes The Persians, Prometheus Bound, and Seven Against Thebes, in the famous translation by Johann Gustav Droysen, which comes remarkably close to the artistry of the original language. It features a current introduction by the Freiburg classical philologist Bernhard Zimmermann, informative introductions to each tragedy, notes, and further reading.
