The era of the early Abbasids is known for its cultural flourishing. Knowledge from the Greeks, Persians, and other cultures was gathered and translated into Arabic across all fields. The newly acquired material also served as a starting point for independent works. However, not much is known about the works themselves. Many were later lost or are still awaiting rediscovery. The present volume makes another one of these works accessible. Muhammad ibn 'Abdallah al-Bazyar wrote it for Caliph al-Mutawakkil (847-861), compiling what was known about falcons and dogs, particularly regarding their treatment for illnesses—an important need, as falconry, the hunting with falcons and dogs, was not only one of the favorite pastimes of the caliphs but also a courtly ritual. In the 13th century, the work of al-Bazyar was recognized.
