The falconry and canine medicine treatise of the "Moamin," which is probably the most widely distributed manual of its kind in the Middle Ages, has long been a focus of research. Important questions, such as its Arabic sources, its history of creation and transmission, and especially the role played by Emperor Frederick II (1194-1250), have, however, remained unresolved or contentious. This volume addresses these questions by examining the entire surviving tradition—40 manuscripts and three printed editions in Latin, Franco-Italian, Italian, and French—and meticulously tracing their spatial, temporal, and content development. It demonstrates, among other things, how the original text from Tunis made its way to the Staufer court and how it was likely significantly shortened there, probably by Frederick II himself.
