No other Roman ruler underwent such profound transformations in monarchical representation as Constantine I, the first Christian emperor (306-337 AD). This is particularly true for the role of the emperor as a successful warrior and brilliant victor, as the friction between traditional and innovative tendencies in the transition from the Principate to Late Antiquity is particularly evident in the realm of military representation of power. Two types of sources, which have so far been considered only peripherally and sporadically from a historical perspective, are particularly suitable for examining the corresponding fields of discourse and action: contemporary panegyrics of rulers and imperial coin and medallion minting. Both genres provide detailed insights into typical, ceremonially framed forms of interaction and communication.
