Hobbes' 'Leviathan', published in 1651, ranks alongside Plato's 'Republic' and Hegel's 'Elements of the Philosophy of Right' as one of the three most significant works of political philosophy. Hobbes draws on the image from the Old Testament, where God speaks to Job: "On earth there is none like him; he is a creature without fear... he is king over all proud beasts" - this is also programmatically depicted as a humanized composite image on the famous title engraving. Hobbes bases his political theory on this image, which incorporates his anthropological, psychological, ethical, and religious reflections.
