After decades of observing the world of birds, Emperor Frederick II, the last Staufer, wrote a textbook on falconry between 1241 and 1248, which gained fame under the title 'De arte venandi cum avibus' ('On the Art of Hunting with Birds'). The scientific accuracy and extraordinary informational content of the text are further enriched by the magnificent illustrations that adorn nearly every page of the book. The over 500 depictions of approximately 80 different bird species and the detailed images related to falconry exhibit astonishing fidelity to nature and precision. They not only add an extra charm to the manuscript but also secure it a unique art-historical significance within medieval book production. This was created after the loss of the original manuscript by Frederick's son Manfred.
