The manuscript of the anonymous fencing treatise from Cologne is worthy of reproduction for many reasons. The most recent one—though with a tragic background—is the collapse of the Historical Archive of the City of Cologne on March 3, 2009. As one of the first publishers, ADEVA has shown interest in rebuilding the book collection. From a research perspective, the paper manuscript from the first third of the 16th century has received little attention, likely because it is a text manuscript with some marginal notes. Consequently, its substantive significance has been overlooked: the transmission of the metallurgical recipe at the beginning is a rarity and points to the art of war and weapon manufacturing. From a linguistic historical standpoint, the manuscript also proves to be an interesting outsider, as it is situated within the Low German language area. Additionally, in terms of fencing history, it stands as an independent work outside of the Liechtenauer tradition. It describes not only the fencing techniques with the longsword and the dagger but also grappling, pole fighting, and fighting with the pig spear—where the weapon type pig spear is also rarely described in literature. With this first edition, ADEVA continues its new thematic area of fencing manuscripts, which was opened with 'Chokehold and Murder Strike.'.
