Imagining, the creation of inner images, is something that constantly occurs as a mental activity of the imagination. In the realms of mysticism and religion, as well as in shamanic healing practices, imaginative pathways have existed for centuries. As a therapeutic tool and a means of self-exploration and personal development (individuation), forms of imagination are particularly significant today and are utilized in all major psychotherapeutic schools of thought. C. G. Jung personally tested Active Imagination and developed it as a distinct method within his analytical therapies, where the act of imagining is not directed by the therapist's prompts. Seven of the most experienced German-speaking psychoanalysts describe this method from both theoretical and application-oriented perspectives.
