Product details

The Rosarium Philosophorum is one of the most successful compendiums of early modern alchemy. It combines a Latin base text, a series of images, and a German poem into an engaging overall presentation of alchemy, describing the processes of purification and transformation of metals as well as the creation of the elixir. The work has been appreciated by natural philosophers, including Isaac Newton. In the 20th century, the Rosarium Philosophorum gained significant attention in the analytical psychology of C. G. Jung. The oldest version of the image cycle in colored pen drawings can be found in a manuscript from the Vadian Collection of the local community of St. Gallen. Alchemy historian Thomas Hofmeier explains the stages of the alchemical process depicted in the images and determines the position of the Rosarium Philosophorum in the history of alchemy during the late Middle Ages and early modern period. Historian Rudolf Gamper examines the enterprising St. Gallen merchant and alchemist Bartlome Schobinger (1500-1585), who was the scribe of the manuscript of the Rosarium Philosophorum.
