The alchemists, founders of modern chemistry, also developed a symbolic form of chemistry aimed at creating the gold of mystical enlightenment. This religious pursuit, which likely included the synthesis of several hallucinogenic drugs, led to the development of a mystical system for the redemption of the human soul and its ultimate reunion with its heavenly origin. Alchemy, the result of years of study, provides a comprehensive overview of the "work" of Western alchemy, known as the Opus Alchymicum. For the first time, this submerged treasure of late medieval and early modern culture is brought to light and revived by the author in a fascinating endeavor of literary archaeology. From its chaotic beginnings to its sun-like completion, the alchemical work is presented.
