The title of this article series "What is Cinema?" is not so much a promise of an answer, but rather a question that the author poses to himself throughout these pages. This line does not claim to provide a comprehensive geology or geography of cinema, but merely aims to take the reader on a series of expeditions, explorations, and overviews in light of the films that presented themselves to the critic for reflection on a daily basis. André Bazin, a world-renowned film critic highly regarded by Bresson, Buñuel, Carné, Cocteau, Fellini, Langlois, Visconti, and Renoir, developed a new consciousness of film and influenced film history with his reflections. His concept of technical realism as the essence of film and his rediscovery of deep focus had the most lasting impact on film criticism and practice.
