These are complemented by Erich Mühsam's essay "Tolstoy's Legacy" on the 100th birthday of the Russian writer and a foreword by Ulrich Klemm. "The Slavery of Our Time" (1900) is one of the most well-known political texts worldwide and is fundamental for understanding Tolstoy's Christian and anti-statist anarchism. "Patriotism and Government" (1900) develops his critique of the state, which Tolstoy sees as always an opponent of freedom and a cause of violence and slavery. "A Call to Humanity" (1901) is directed against institutional Christianity, which Tolstoy accuses of betraying its origins.
