When the Neue Deutsche Welle spilled over the banks 30 years ago, it was initially boycotted and fought against by the media and record companies, who completely underestimated its artistic potential. It was only when the new music, which had its roots in punk, transformed into dance music with German lyrics that sold like hotcakes even without their help, that the music industry woke up and marketed the movement until its decline. Bands like Ideal, Nena, and Trio climbed the charts from the bottom up and reached the top positions in England and America as well. The influence on later music styles such as Fun-Punk, Hamburger Schule, or German Hip-Hop, as well as musicians like Die Ärzte or Wir sind Helden, is undeniable and worthy of a critical homage.
