Product details

Georg Gotthart (died 1619) was a locksmith and metalworker in Solothurn and the author of three dramas, which were performed publicly by the Solothurn public under his direction: The "Histori vom Kampf zwischen den Römern und denen von Alba" (1584), "Ein schön lustiges Spil oder Tragedi von Zerstörung der grossen und festen königlichen Stadt" (1584), "Ein schön lustiges Spil oder Tragedi von Zerstörung der grossen und festen königlichen Stadt Troia oder Ilio" (1598/99), and "Ein schöne lehrreiche Histori und Comoedia, von dem Leben des pious und Gottsfürchtigen Tobiae" (1617/19). The present volume shows that interest in these plays is appropriate. Here, texts have been preserved that were not, as is usually the case, written by a schoolmaster, cleric, or scholar, but were presented to the public by an inquisitive craftsman. He made an unusual choice of material. His work represents the humanistic education of a Swiss Renaissance, with which he, as a Latin ignoramus, could not have been directly familiar. In addition to the turn to antiquity, the plays also take up the urban context of the time and try to express it. From the perspective of theatre history, Gotthart's works are witnesses to a development that led from the spiritual play and the carnival play to the large-scale urban event. For the first time, Georg Gotthart's plays are presented here in an edition with detailed commentary. The comprehensive study section is supplemented by the edition of the first play "Histori vom Kampf zwischen den Römern und denen von Alba"; the two other dramas by Gotthart ("Ein schön lustiges Spil oder Tragedi von Zerstörung der grossen und festen königlichen Stadt Troia oder Ilio" and "Ein schöne lehrreiche Histori und Comoedia, von dem Leben des pious und Gottsfürchtigen Tobiae") are made available online.
