In the broad stream of a new spirituality, new Sufi paths have also emerged. Sufism is often referred to as Islamic mysticism, but it predates Islam and is fundamentally transconfessional. Brigitte Dorst describes a new, contemporary Sufi path that connects the insights and methods of C.G. Jung's Analytical Psychology with the rich heritage of Sufism. Clearly and with the help of many exercises, she demonstrates that teaching and learning in a modern Sufi group occur through spiritual dream work, the study of wisdom texts, psychospiritual group work, individual conversations, and the exploration of Sufi stories and symbols. At the heart of the spiritual practice is heart meditation. The aim is to open the heart and expand consciousness—through a transformation process that is intertwined with longing, devotion, and love.
