According to Adorno, law is "the ur-phenomenon of irrational rationality." The young Hegel believed that the state must treat "free people as a mechanical gearwork" and therefore should cease to exist. Eugen Paschukanis' work is a contribution to the materialist critique of those forms of exchange that are generally considered unavoidable: law and state. He understands them, like commodities and capital, as fetishized forms of abstract domination that must not be used for emancipatory purposes but rather must be practically abolished, so that in the end, something more emerges than the repetition of the same: the subjugation of the individual to seemingly necessary social coercion.
