In 1913, twenty-year-old Rocco from a village in Sicily has taken a stand against the Mafia, refusing to serve them like his father once did. Rosetta, also 20, has confronted the Don of her Sicilian hometown and narrowly escaped a rape, while thirteen-year-old Raquel is the sole survivor of a pogrom against her Jewish hometown in Ukraine. These three young orphans, trapped in a hopeless situation, embark on a dangerous journey to Argentina in search of a better life. However, the life that awaits them in Buenos Aires presents them with seemingly insurmountable challenges once again.
