Product details

Germany after 1945 - Jewish Life in the Land of the Perpetrators. Who knows that after World War II, 300,000 Jews fled to Germany and began a new life as survivors of the Holocaust in DP camps (for "Displaced Persons") under the protection of the Allies? In 1946/47, triggered by anti-Semitic excesses, 300,000 Eastern European Jews, particularly from Poland, fled to the very land of the perpetrators. To escape new persecution, they mostly sought refuge in the American zone. The DPs did not come to stay permanently; they believed they were merely passing through to Palestine. A large number eventually moved there after the founding of the State of Israel in 1948, with many also going to the USA. The Föhrenwald camp, the last of the well over a hundred DP camps, did not close until early 1957. The common thread of the book is the fate of Lea Waks.
