From then on, Edgar literally witnesses Hitler's rise and observes, initially with childlike naivety and then with increasing clarity, how the National Socialists transform Germany into a brutal dictatorship. Edgar Feuchtwanger grows up in a sheltered, educated environment. His father is the publisher of the esteemed Duncker & Humblot publishing house, and his mother is a pianist. In his Jewish household, the intellectuals of the Weimar Republic come and go: writers, painters, musicians. His uncle Lion, the famous author, mingles with figures like Carl Schmitt and Thomas Mann. However, with the rise of Adolf Hitler, the neighbor of the Feuchtwangers, a dark shadow falls over their lives.
