The search for alternative sanctions to imprisonment has been a significant part of the discussion in criminal law for some time. The issue has gained current importance due to the German government's intended reform of the sanctions system. This reform is expected to further expand outpatient sanctions. Key components of the proposed reform include the extension of the application scope of driving bans, the introduction of electronically monitored house arrest, and the expansion of community service. The advantages and disadvantages of these sanctions will be discussed in this paper. The starting point is the justification of a specific need for outpatient sanctions. This is followed by a critical examination of the mentioned alternative sanctions. Finally, other reform approaches based on the existing sanctions system will also be considered.
