Female genital mutilation (FGM) is still practiced in many countries and cultures, often justified by deeply rooted traditions and rituals, despite evidence that it poses significant health risks and often results in lifelong trauma. Are alternative transition rituals a way for local communities and development cooperation partners to preserve positive traditions while avoiding harmful practices?
