The contributions compiled in this anthology on aging research were developed and written in two different working contexts. One group of contributions emerged from the work of a small international working group led by the Nestor of American aging psychology, James E. Birren. In this small group, which collaborates on a personal level, scientists from various disciplines in America, Canada, Sweden, Finland, the Netherlands, and Germany have been working together for eight years to exchange and discuss questions regarding the relationship between life course, biography, and aging, based both on their individual research and personal experiences. This working group has summarized its previous discussions in two publications: the first was released in 1991.
