Since the 1980s, memorial site education has established itself as an educational field with a claim to independence and has become institutionalized. Memorial sites are considered suitable places for engaging with the crimes of the past, primarily due to their authenticity. This suggests an immediate encounter while overlooking the extensive negotiations of history that take place on-site, which are essential for understanding. What happens during tours, seminars, and study days, how discussions are conducted, and the contradictions that emerge in educational interactions have so far eluded educational scientific reflection and analysis. This work now provides a glimpse into the black box of memorial site educational practice concerning Nazi crimes.
