Two aspects bring the Gospel of John into our focus: on one hand, the clear structure that Rudolf Steiner pointed out in early lectures, and on the other hand, its multiple connections to Greek culture. Rudolf Steiner viewed the Gospel of John as the Greek garment for the emerging Christianity. This assessment led to the question of how this finding is confirmed in the text of the Gospel and what echo it found over the centuries. It became evident that the three major themes of the Gospel of John could only find their corresponding understanding within the Greek way of thinking. Clement and Origen of Alexandria were the first thinkers to grasp the significance of the connection between Christianity and Hellenism. Already in the early Middle Ages, Origen's main work was defamed, and he himself was branded a heretic.
