Our society can take pride in the fact that people with disabilities are living longer. Consequently, the target group for therapeutic educational work is also expanding, which presents professionals as well as volunteer companions in disability support with new tasks, expectations, and open questions. Bernhard Schmalenbach focuses on professionally grounded assessments regarding the knowledge and skills that staff in therapeutic educational institutions should possess in order to adequately support older people with disabilities. In addition to perspectives on aging from sociology, philosophy, and psychology, various approaches and methodological as well as thematic focal points in the field of disability and aging are outlined. Special consideration is given to the biographical aspect.
