Rudolf Steiner engaged with Goethe's Faust poetry repeatedly over decades. For him, Faust represented the "man of modern times," who has left behind the pious faith of the Middle Ages and seeks to explore the world with an unrelenting thirst for knowledge in the spirit of modernity. However, Rudolf Steiner never intended to approach the multifaceted nature of Goethe's work through literary or systematic interpretations; instead, he aimed to stimulate perspectives that could reveal the deep underlying and background elements, the spiritual dimension, and the spiritual realism of the poetry. Volume 2 contains discussions on individual scenes from the Faust poetry, some of which were related to productions that Rudolf Steiner realized at the Goetheanum starting in 1915.
