Heidelberg 1388: Young Madlen is already in the service of a midwife at an early age, assisting her with births and the treatment of women's ailments. In addition to her extensive knowledge of herbs, which she uses to alleviate pain, she accidentally discovers the calming effect of flickering candlelight combined with spoken psalms during a birth. Naturally, no one must learn of this special method, as it could only be considered witchcraft.

One day, she is called to assist a respected citizen who is heavily pregnant and has obviously been physically abused. While Madlen is able to save the woman's life, she cannot save the baby. The husband accuses the healer of poisoning the child with herbs. This marks the beginning of Madlen's flight and her struggle for the truth, where she experiences much love and affection, while simultaneously facing outright hatred.
