What is worth more: a full money transport or a real Cézanne? Neither is worth dying for. Nevertheless, four friends take the risk and plan to steal a painting by the Provençal painter. On their way from an enchanted castle in the Luberon, where it has been kept secret from the public by its owners for generations, to an art exhibition near Aix en Provence, they succeed in their heist. However, there are casualties. Commissioner Papperin and his team must contend with the eccentric worldviews of the impoverished French landed gentry. At the same time, they conduct their investigations into the world of the precariat, the frustrated and hopeless lives of petty criminals in the suburbs of the working-class towns of the Midi.
