Product details
In 1919, the social democratic city government of Vienna initiated a reform program to shape the infrastructure according to socialist ideals. The centerpiece of "Red Vienna" was the municipal housing projects, 400 urban blocks that provided living space for one-tenth of the city's population, distributed throughout the city. However, during the construction campaign, Austria was governed by a conservative-clerical, anti-socialist majority. In her book, Eve Blau demonstrates how this ideological conflict shaped the buildings of Red Vienna, how the architecture drew on its own codes, practices, and history to define its position in relation to the political framework. The book, long considered a standard work in the education of architecture and art historians, is now available for the first time in German translation.
