David McKee, born in 1935 in Devonshire, is a freelance painter and internationally recognized picture book artist. He began selling cartoons to the press while still in college. Today, he lives and works in London and Nice. McKee has created various characters and developed them into book series. The most famous and successful character is Elmer, the colorful patchwork elephant. He has fans all over the world. David McKee doesn't remember exactly when he invented Elmer, but he clearly recalls being influenced by Paul Klee at that time. Thus, Elmer is not only the most colorful of all elephants but also has the most famous godfather. David McKee is regarded as an artistic multi-talent and has created numerous beloved picture books.
