After studying with Manfred Clement and Hansjörg Schellenberger, his first engagement took him to the Berlin Philharmonic, of which he has been a member since 1986. As a solo oboist, he performed with the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic under the direction of Daniel Barenboim, James Levine, Riccardo Muti, Mariss Jansons, Bernard Haitink, Claudio Abbado, and Simon Rattle.
