The fragility of things, the threat to existence, and, as its limiting factor, the immeasurable from which everything rises, fleetingly shines, and in which it sinks again – this is the experience from which Ungaretti began to write poetry after the First World War. It has remained the foundation of his poetry. With this announcement, Paul Celan's translation of Giuseppe Ungaretti's "La terra promessa" (1950) and "Il taccuino del vecchio" (1960) was published in a bilingual edition by Insel Verlag in 1968. Following Ingeborg Bachmann's slightly older translation (1961), Paul Celan's commitment significantly contributed to Giuseppe Ungaretti's special status in Germany. Celan's translation has been integrated into Ungaretti's work in a unique way. In the original editions of the cycles, he incorporated his translation, with the exception of a few standalone pages.
