Kling grew up in Wilhelmshorst near Potsdam with her five years older sister, actress Gerit Kling. She attended a polytechnic secondary school. Originally, Kling wanted to study medicine after graduating from high school, but she was discovered and cast in 1987/88 in a leading role as a young mother in the DEFA film "Grüne Hochzeit" by Herrmann Zschoche. This film brought her to a wider audience. In 1989, the year of the reunification, she graduated from high school in Potsdam and then went to drama school. According to her own statements, she fled to West Germany five days before the fall of the Berlin Wall.
