The notes on the Children's and Household Tales of the Brothers Grimm were first published in 1812 and 1815 as an appendix to the two volumes of the first edition, then in a separate volume in 1822, and in a third edition in 1856. From the very beginning, they proved to be an extremely valuable resource for fairy tale research and comparative material history due to their richness and reliability, leading to a frequent demand for a new edition of the work. Fourteen years ago, Professor Herman Grimm entrusted me with the handwritten copies of his father and his uncle for this purpose. The task certainly presented some difficulties. While it was easy to incorporate notes about the sources and the time of the individual recordings into the text, it was also possible to include those tales from earlier editions that were later suppressed or only partially included by the Brothers Grimm.
