This volume gathers 24 contributions from the interdisciplinary colloquium held in October 2009. Three of the editors present an overview of the general theme of Antiquity in the Middle Ages from the perspectives of provincial Roman and early historical archaeology, as well as medieval history. This is followed by studies on Roman sites and their continued use in the Middle Ages, before addressing institutional continuities across the epochal divide. Further essays focus on the orientation of early medieval landscapes and settlements based on older structures, and finally, medieval knowledge about Antiquity is discussed. Thus, the volume offers a diverse perspective on the survival, influence, and perception of Antiquity in the Middle Ages.
