In the course of the EU's eastward expansion in 2007, many people from Romania and Bulgaria came to Western Europe and also to Germany. These immigrants are often mistakenly generalized as "Roma" or "Gypsies," which simultaneously attributes centuries-old stereotypes to them and often makes them victims of social exclusion.
