Product details

In his Apocalypse Commentary (1670), Christian Knorr von Rosenroth refers not only to Christian doctrine for the interpretation of the Johannine visions but also to Greek and Latin antiquity, as well as Jewish, Egyptian, and Oriental traditions. He deconstructs the text and reorganizes it based on the imagery and conceptual connections of its parts to provide a unified interpretation. The Apocalypse Commentary signals Knorr von Rosenroth's efforts to broaden the intellectual horizon of the Christian West by incorporating Jewish tradition, which will culminate in the volumes of Kabbala Denudata from 1677 to 1684. In his interpretation of apocalyptic imagery, Knorr von Rosenroth consistently focuses on their possible correspondence with historical events. From the crucifixion of Christ by the Romans to the Turkish wars of modern times, he interprets world history as salvation history, culminating in a Millennial Kingdom of Christ based on justice and brotherhood. For Christian Knorr von Rosenroth, the Apocalypse, following the Old Testament and the four Gospels, is the revelation of a God who promises himself to all people. The first new edition of the Apocalypse Commentary is accompanied by a detailed afterword and a biographical-bibliographical note.
