In precision tool and mold making, there is an increasing demand for mold inserts with the highest form accuracies and surface qualities made from temperature- and wear-resistant materials. For example, hard metals and high-performance ceramics are used as mold insert materials for the precision blanking of glass lens systems for the optical industry. In this context, precision grinding represents a key technology. The ductile grinding of these brittle-hard materials enables efficient component processing, significantly reducing the subsequent polishing effort, which can sometimes be completely eliminated. For the precise machining of functional surfaces to optical quality, grinding tools with very fine diamond grain are required. Particularly with grinding tools that have metallic bonding systems, high profiles are achieved.
