Laser beam cutting of metallic materials is a procedure that has been used industrially for years. Particularly in the thin sheet metal sector with material thicknesses below one millimeter, there are numerous applications in the fields of automotive, aerospace, medical technology, and micromechanics. The underlying general trend towards miniaturization and the need for new qualification procedures relate to a wide range of manufacturing processes and materials to be processed. The spectrum of metallic materials alone ranges from steel and stainless steel to copper, brass, titanium, and copper beryllium. Due to the high focusability with focus diameters below 10 µm, the application area of laser cutting processes extends to traditional drilling methods. Laser processes combined with ultrafast technology show great potential for application.
