The central theme of this dissertation is the question of the benefits of factory planning. This question confronts application-oriented researchers in two areas. Firstly, it arises in every upcoming factory planning project in industrial practice, where the necessary planning steps and project design are established. To maximize their returns, clients seek clarity on what level of effort for planning is justified. Secondly, this question is raised when it comes to the future scientific advancement of factory planning. This advancement requires, after many years of research on individual models, a fundamental basis that makes the cause-and-effect principle of factory planning accessible through an evaluable theory.
