In the context of honing gears under wear conditions, the methods of single grain scratching and FEM cutting simulation were employed. Subsequent practical experiments analyzed how the effects identified in the foundational studies can be transferred to the real process. The results of the foundational studies showed that due to the low strength of the resin bond, the grinding grain sinks into the bond when in contact with the workpiece surface. This reduces the effective kinematic grain number and decreases grinding performance. In contrast, the ceramic bond exhibits high strength and keeps the grinding grains firmly in their original position throughout the entire machining process. In the relevant low cutting speed range for honing gears, an increase in cutting speed does not lead to a significant improvement.
